Serve Every Student

Texas public schools serve every student, and that promise is simple and powerful: every child is welcome. Public schools serve students of every background, income level, language, ability, and ZIP code. They educate children who arrive ready for advanced coursework, children who need extra academic support, children learning English, children experiencing homelessness, children in foster care, and children with disabilities who are entitled to specialized services. 

That responsibility is one of the clearest differences between public schools and other education options. Public schools do not get to choose which students to serve. They are built to meet students where they are and help them reach their potential. 

Serving every student requires more than good intentions. It requires trained teachers, special education professionals, counselors, nurses, paraprofessionals, transportation staff, technology support, and campus leaders who can coordinate services and respond to individual student needs. It also requires funding that keeps pace with the actual cost of providing those services. 

Students with disabilities are one example. Their success often depends on individualized instruction, therapies, assistive technology, specialized transportation, behavioral supports, and legally required services. When special education funding in Texas falls short, schools must still provide those services, often by stretching local budgets and redirecting resources from other pressing needs. 

Texas can strengthen public education by making sure the schools that serve every student have the people, resources, and flexibility to do that work well. Here are some key facts:  

• Public schools welcome all children. Every student deserves access to a safe, supportive, high-quality school close to home. 
• Specialized services require real resources. Students with disabilities and other learning needs depend on trained professionals and consistent support. 
• Opportunity starts with access. A strong public school system gives every family a place to turn, regardless of income, geography, language, or ability.
